Why are Pink Salmon also called Humpback Salmon? Humpback or "humpies" is derived from the male salmons distinct hump that they develop, after they enter the fresh water. On the Kenai, you will find all shapes and sizes of Pink Salmon. Also, when Pink Salmon emerge from the gravel they don't spend the typical two years in the freshwater, they quickly head to the ocean where they spend a few years before returning to the same piece of gravel!
